Severe clinical unipolar depression is different to Schizophrenia and Manic Depression (Bipolar Disorder) but all are among the toughest mental illnesses.

The Electro-convulsive Therapy is commonly referred to as the Shock Therapy. Patients are given both muscle relaxer and a general anesthetic. Once the procedure is conducted, it will result in a seizure and the relaxant is given to prevent it from happening. Electrodes are placed on the scalp and are given a controlled electric-pulse, thus causing brief seizure activating in the region of the brain. This relaxes the patients’ muscles and only the mild moving of the feet and hands are seen. After a few minutes, the patient wakes up only to find that he remembers nothing of the procedure or the events that surrounds it. But, they might appear confused after receiving the treatment. The above procedure is prescribed to repeat in a month or in 3 months.

Vagal-Nerve Stimulation is said to be a procedure where equipment similar to that of a pacemaker is kept on the chest of the patient suffering from severe clinical depression. Then, the nerve from the neck to the brain considered to control depression receives a pulse, giving the patient relief.

Another effective way of treating severe clinical depression is through herbal treatments. They tend to be beneficial in the supplement form. Several particular herbs are said to be mixed in a specific formula that affects the mood. But before using it, you need to check its pharmaceutical grade.

These are some of the ways currently available to treat patients suffering from severe clinical depression. Continuous research is taking place to get more effective treatments for the patients suffering from severe clinical depression. Depression is infact a serious illness that needs immediate attention and should not be left aside. But there is plenty of hope from recovering from it.
